Sofía Cristina Jiménez: contemporary visual artist in Madrid

Sofía Cristina Jiménez is a contemporary visual artist from Madrid known for her acrylic work on Belgian linen and for the limited edition Digigraphie-certified fine art prints she produces under the name El Espacio Permanente. Her practice combines surrealism, visual poetry, and a critical perspective on nature and artifice.

From luxury fashion to the studio

Before dedicating herself fully to art, Sofía Cristina Jiménez worked for over thirteen years as a Leather Goods & Accessories Manager for international luxury fashion brands, including Loewe and Delpozo. In 2019, she began her full-time artistic practice. This transition—from luxury object to work of art, from industry to studio—is reflected in the attention to material, detail, and durability that characterizes her work.

Style and visual language

Sofía Cristina Jiménez's work stems from surrealism and visual poetry. Her pieces depict animals transformed into metallic helium balloons inhabiting natural ecosystems: rainforests, lagoons, coral reefs, and African steppes. The tension between the living and the artificial, between nature and plastic, is the conceptual axis that runs through her work.

She works primarily on large-format Belgian linen with acrylic paint, and in limited editions of fine art prints on Hahnemühle Digigraphie certified paper. Her works are signed, numbered, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Technique and materials

Alongside acrylic painting on linen, Sofía Cristina Jiménez works in watercolor on Hahnemühle 350g 100% cotton paper, a medium she uses for her Botanical Aquarium series and for unique, small-format works. Graphite and pencil are a regular part of her process: sketches, studies, and independent works on paper that explore line and detail with an economy of means different from that of her large-format linen pieces.

This technical diversity - acrylic, watercolor, graphite - responds to different intentions: the large format on linen for the collector's work and the conceptual series, the paper for the limited edition and the more intimate work.

Main series

Plastic Nature is her most extensive series: more than twenty large-format works in which balloon animals inhabit real natural landscapes. Inspired by the dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History, it reflects on the environmental crisis through beauty and tenderness. Works from this series are part of the permanent collections at Royal Caribbean International and the Cromática Museum in Toledo.

Ancestors and Descendants brings together aristocratic portraits of animals, like metallic balloons, in small and medium formats on linen. Botanical Aquarium is a watercolor series on Hahnemühle paper in which each fish has a fin transformed into a flower—half botanical art, half natural art. Natural History Diorama, awarded at the 2025 Miguelturra Fine Arts Competition, uses the logic of the naturalist diorama to question what remains of nature when representation has replaced it.
